Her skinny neck has been clasped in the chubby, slippery fists of French babies since 1961. Her bumpy head and flexible feet have soothed millions of sore little gums. You might say she's become Hollywood's most homely It Girl. She's a 17-centimetre rubber giraffe named Sophie. And Sophie is coming to a drooling Canadian kid near you....

The genteel giraffe is fashioned out of natural rubber and non-toxic paint so it's safe and soft. Most important: Babies adore Sophie.

"People come in the store saying they've heard this toy is like candy for babies." She began selling Sophie in May and it has been flying out the door ever since.

Aside from making a happy little squeak when squeezed, the spotted giraffe does little more than stare blankly, smile sweetly and smell faintly of vanilla. So what makes Sophie the Giraffe such a phenomenon?

Entrepreneurial mom Jane Wood says part of the appeal is in Sophie's retro look. She was living in Britain when she first met Sophie the Giraffe. Her fourth child got it as a gift from friends who were visiting France, where, she discovered, the giraffe is legendary. "Over there, it's a standard thing," Wood says. "If you have a baby, you have a Sophie."

I love sophie the giraffe and so does my little girl. They can grip it easily and it is soft to chew and Im not worried about her chewing on a piece of plastic.

I love this toy because my baby loves it, he chews on the ears the most and it was actually the first toy he could hold in his little hands. Some kind relatives (the dreaded in-laws) bought me some made in china "teethers" with melted polyester shards falling off of them straight from the box and I tossed them in the trash where they belong. My baby is not using anything but natural toys for teething! This toy is so cute and make a non-annoying squeak - very important as you will be listening to it for hours as your child delights in it. I have chewed on it myself, to test it out, it tastes perfectly fine.

My twin boys are three months old and love this toy, they grasp onto it and suck on it already. I dont travel without it, it is soothing to them. The only problem I have is keeping it away from the dog!!

everywhere my daughter goes, she needs Sophie to be in her hand to play with, I mean, to chew on. In the car, in the stroller, etc. she manages to chew on Sophies each leg, head, nose. Very easy to grap and hold. Great teething toy. the best part of it is that it is chemical free. I have a peace of mind watching my daughter chewing on a toy like it.
